Robotics is the interdisciplinary field of engineering and computer science concerned with designing, constructing, operating and using robots. It combines mechanical engineering, electrical circuits, power systems and software to build machines that assist humans across agriculture, manufacturing, medicine, space exploration and other domains.

Origin YearIsaac Asimov coined the word robotics in his 1941 short story Liar!, but the field as an engineering discipline dates its practical origin to 1961, when Unimate, the first industrial robot, began operating on a General Motors production line.
