Tim Berners Lee is a British computer scientist who, while working at CERN, proposed the World Wide Web in 1989 and wrote the first web browser and web server in 1990 and 1991, defining the HTTP protocol and HTML markup language that still underlie the web today. He received the 2016 ACM Turing Award for inventing the World Wide Web, the first open, royalty free system for sharing information over the internet, and has since advocated for an open, decentralized web through the World Wide Web Consortium, which he founded and directs.
