John Leroy Hennessy is an American computer scientist and chairman of Alphabet Inc. He is one of the founders of MIPS Technologies and Atheros, and served as the tenth president of Stanford University from 2000 to 2016. Along with David Patterson, Hennessy received the 2017 Turing Award for developing the reduced instruction set computer, or RISC, architecture, which is now used in the great majority of new computer chips.
