American chemist and businessman who, in a 1965 paper, formulated the observation that became known as Moore's law, and who co-founded Intel Corporation after helping found Fairchild Semiconductor. Moore's forecast of steadily doubling transistor density guided decades of semiconductor industry planning and became the standard measure of computing's hardware progress.
