David Andrew Patterson is an American computer scientist who was a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley from 1976 until his 2016 retirement, after which he became a distinguished software engineer at Google. He is noted for pioneering contributions to reduced instruction set computer (RISC) design, coining the term RISC and leading the Berkeley RISC project, and for leading research on redundant arrays of inexpensive disks (RAID) storage with Randy Katz. He and John L. Hennessy won the 2017 Turing Award for their work developing RISC, and their co-authored textbooks on computer architecture are widely used in computer science education.
