Andrey Breslav was the founding lead designer of Kotlin at JetBrains, leading its design and development from the project's 2010 start through the Kotlin 1.0 release in 2016; Roman Elizarov later succeeded him as the language's project lead. Breslav described Kotlin's goal as an industrial-strength, fully Java-interoperable language, and said the team named it after Kotlin Island, near Saint Petersburg.
