Haskell is a general-purpose, statically typed, purely functional programming language with type inference and lazy evaluation. It pioneered type classes for type-safe operator overloading and a monadic approach to input and output, and is named after logician Haskell Curry.

Significance

Designed by a committee, including Lennart Augustsson, Paul Hudak, John Hughes, Simon Peyton Jones and Philip Wadler, rather than a single author; it pioneered type classes and monadic input and output, becoming a major influence on later functional and statically typed language design. Some computer scientists, including Simon Peyton Jones and Robert Harper, have argued lazy evaluation complicates reasoning about performance, making Haskell arguably unsuited to teaching introductory programming. 1
